Summer Break Haikus

Haiku FridayChildren in their shorts
rush to end of year parties.
Summer's almost here.

Mama, hair tied back,
rushes to help and get gifts,
can't make time to write.

Kids long for hot days
and a change in the routine
Mama relies on.

When I was a child
I'd dance barefoot in the grass
the first day of break.

Deep breath of warm air.
Let go of the to do list.
Be a child again.

  1. Great reminder. I've been dreading summer break even though I remember how exciting it was to be a kid on summer break. Freedom.

I should print this out and tape it inside my bathroom mirror. My kids will thank you.

  2. Ah, yes, letting go of the to do list. Definitely something I must learn to do!

  3. I'm printing these out to put on my fridge.

My kids find June one of the most stressful months- not only because the weather is up and down when it's supposed to be "summer" and according to them they should be wearing shorts and tshirts every day, but because the routine is going to be gone in a few weeks (we have a "summer routine", but it's not the same as a school routine.) I always want to do something spectacular to thank the wonderful teachers and aides who support us, and rarely seem to get to it.

While I love summer and always have as I'm a gardener, I dread it more and more each year. Maybe it's time that all of my family just got out and played in the dirt.
