Handling Things Differently Haikus

hand1

Two wet plastic balls:
Small neurotypical hand
grips both of them tight.

The summer sun shines
and cool water soothes her palms,
a welcome delight.

hand2

One wet plastic ball:
Autistic child's fingertips
touch it so lightly.

Water, tiny drops,
like so many small pin pricks,
are kept from his skin.

  1. and the thing I have found out it that both my kids need handling differently... it just works better that way.

  2. Ah, the water aversion! Nigel hated to get the tiniest drops of water on himself and would tear off his clothes (in public) if they got wet at all. I am thankful that he no longer needs to do that!

  3. This touched me so deeply, and I'm not really sure why (other than that you write beautifully).
