Note to Self

This picture made me laugh — a lot. But that could just be because I'm massively sleep deprived and a little loopy.

Dear Self,

If you are going to take a nap on Sunday, I'd like you to know that it's a really bad idea to take a long one in the afternoon. I know you didn't mean to lie down at noon and not get up until 4 p.m. I know you tried to set an alarm but never heard it. Still, it probably would have been better to go back to bed at 7 a.m. since you knew then that you were tired, and Mark was up and able to watch the kids.

But given that you didn't do that and did instead take that really long, late nap — as refreshing as a nice ice-cold Coca-Cola may be under most circumstances — it was just a spectacularly bad idea to enjoy that caffeinated beverage with last night's dinner. Of course, I don't really have to tell you this because I know that's what you were thinking just before 3:00 a.m. when you looked at the clock for the last time. Well, that and "shit, I have to get up in three hours." Still, you comforted yourself with the thought that you'd take a nap while the kids were at school.

And that would have been good planning, if Janie hadn't turned your three hours of sleep into two when she climbed into your bed at 5 a.m. feeling sick. Now there is no time to nap while the kids are at school because one of the kids is not in school.

Now maybe — just maybe — this is the bottom that you need to hit in order to change your insomniac ways, but since you just bought three more cases of the caffeinated, sugared bliss that is Coca-Cola, I'm thinking not.

Love,
Me

  1. Oh insomnia, my nemesis. The best I ever slept was when I was pregnant. Before that I'd struggled with fatigue, exhaustion, and insomnia for as long as I can remember. I hope you get some rest tonight.
