I've seen my bodya mask I show to the world,
not my own true face.
I've seen my body
a lure to gain attention,
love and approval.
I've seen my body
a useless shell for my mind,
worthy of neglect.
I've rushed in eager
to devour my soft heart
and cast off the rind.
An old friend
You can tend the inside by
tending the outside.
Yoga teaches me:
Body can calm the mind and
the mind, the body.
Before bed, I pause,
take down the scented lotion,
rub my legs, for me.
Body image is not just all about looking pretty. It is all about giving inner beauty a visual, public outlet.
ReplyDeleteLovely haikus.
Truly, you are a goddess of Haiku. Someone should shower you with apple blossoms or something.
ReplyDeleteBody image... I've been struggling with that quite a bit lately. The final frontier for me on so many levels. My weight is a wall that keeps others at a distance. Well... It's supposed to, anyway. Unfortunately that's not working and still like me. What's up with that? Now my weight is useless, so I have to take it off. Stupid work!
Your haikus get better and better. Loved this one.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful haiku. Dealing with body issues myself: my son just turned one and I have yet to hit the gym since before I was on bedrest while pregnant. Also recently weaned and lost my big breastfeeding boobs. Now back to the teeny tiny bee stings I had before. :( Maybe I should try some yoga too.
